For nearly four decades, Family 1st Medical – a proudly Nova Scotia, family-owned company – has been committed to improving the quality of life for people across the province. Since 1987, our mission has remained clear: to help Nova Scotians move easier and breathe better, supporting greater independence, comfort, and confidence in everyday life.

We specialize in mobility and respiratory solutions designed to meet a wide range of needs. Our respiratory services include home and portable oxygen as well as CPAP and BiPAP therapy. We also provide a variety of mobility and accessibility products, including stairlifts, ceiling lifts, platform lifts, wheelchairs, scooters, and personal emergency response systems, all aimed at making daily living safer and more accessible.

Our journey began in 1987 with our head office in New Minas. As our services expanded, we moved to a larger facility at 8995 Commercial Street in 1996 to better support our growing client base. Over the years, Family 1st has continued to grow to meet the evolving needs of communities across Nova Scotia. Our first branch office opened in Sydney in 2003, followed by Yarmouth in 2007 and Antigonish in 2010. The Sydney office has since relocated to a larger facility to better serve clients throughout Cape Breton. In 2019, we expanded further with the opening of Family Medical Sackville, and in 2025, relocated those operations to a larger, modern office in Bedford.

To further improve access to care, Family 1st also operates a Satellite Clinic in Shelburne, along with dedicated Sleep Clinics in Inverness, Chéticamp, and Port Hawkesbury.
