Traveling with Your CPAP Machine:
A Checklist from Family 1st Medical’s Dawn Oliver, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) & Antigonish Branch Co-ordinator
Before you go on your trip, keep these tips in mind to make sure you have a smooth experience with your CPAP machine:
-
Bring your CPAP machine with you
Even though carrying an extra bag while traveling may seem like a hassle, it’s important to consider how you felt before using CPAP therapy. You wouldn’t want to feel tired and irritable during your vacation.
-
Check if you need power adapters
Especially for international trips, check if you need power adapters for your CPAP machine. Some machines can work with different voltages when traveling internationally. Also, consider bringing an extension cord as power outlets near your bed might be used by lamps or alarm clocks.
-
Make sure you have distilled water
Check to see if distilled water is available at your destination or plan to bring some with you. Many airlines and countries allow you to bring unopened water in your luggage. For longer trips, consider getting an extra mask or silicone pillow in case your equipment gets damaged or stolen.
-
Consider airport security
Since your CPAP machine is considered a medical device, it won’t count as part of your carry-on luggage. Be prepared for airport security to ask you to open the bag for inspection. Bringing your prescription and the manual for the CPAP machine and humidifier is a good idea.
